A fan of foxes from an early age.

Patti Calkosz

I write fiction with lots of humor and heart. My debut novel, OLAF AND ESSEX, a middle grade contemporary fantasy which takes place in an alternate New York City, was released on October 15, 2024.

I’d been trying to find my creative niche all my adult life; in the mid-2000’s I read a book about recovering from a chronic illness—a “syndrome”—I’d been diagnosed with. Everyone interviewed believed the illness was a wake-up call from their soul. That book, along with a lot of reflection and some signs I felt the Universe had sent me, set me on the path of fiction writing.

I spend a lot of time working to heal—I’m currently taking a course to help my dysregulated nervous system, and I meditate and practice Reiki. Getting on the “alternative healing” track made it easy to slide onto the “conscious spirituality” track; that immersion comes out in my writing.

My characters’ thoughts about Oneness and the depictions of spirits in my novel reflect my own experiences and my current spiritual understanding (which is, I’m still very, very confused about everything), along with some artistic license and wish-fulfillment, probably.
